A resposta europeia? Silêncio ou desculpas diplomáticas. Alemanha, França e a própria chefe de política externa da UE foram claros: “Não vamos colocar nossos soldados em risco”. Essa postura lembra dolorosamente Neville Chamberlain em 1938. Acreditan...

The Mystery of the Woman Clothed in Purple and Scarlet in the Apocalypse

The Woman Clothed in Purple and Scarlet: A Symbol of Worldly Compromise

In the book of Revelation, we encounter rich symbols that help us understand spiritual, historical, and prophetic aspects. One striking example is in Revelation 17:4, where the apostle John presents us with an impressive vision of a woman clothed in purple and scarlet, adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls. This figure is described as sitting on a beast with seven heads and ten horns, which fills John with great admiration and astonishment.

The Symbolism of the Woman and Her Attire

The description of the woman symbolizes more than wealth or luxury. Her garments of purple and scarlet are colors associated with royalty and power, but also with corruption and worldly seduction. Gold and precious stones indicate ostentation but suggest a pursuit of earthly glory instead of genuine spirituality. This woman, according to traditional interpretation, represents a church (or religious system) that has strayed from divine principles to ally with the world's power systems. Her position "sitting on the beast" illustrates her support and dependence on governments and political institutions, indicating a commitment to worldly ideologies rather than God.

The Contrast with the Bride Clothed in White

Revelation 19:7-8 introduces a very different woman: the Lamb’s bride, dressed in fine linen, pure and radiant. She represents the true church, faithful to Christ and adorned with justice and holiness. This bride symbolizes the pure communion between God and His people, highlighting a profound contrast with the woman clothed in purple and scarlet.

While the woman in Revelation 17 personifies a corrupted and compromised faith, the bride represents the church that lives with integrity, seeking to fulfill God’s purpose on Earth. This contrast challenges us to reflect on our spiritual journey: Are we seeking worldly recognition or eternal glory?

John's Astonishment and Its Importance

John’s astonishment at this vision is understandable. He witnesses a figure that seems to represent something holy (a church) but is actually involved in deceit and infidelity. This reaction reminds us that not everything that appears sacred truly reflects God’s values.

Lessons for Today

The message contained in this chapter of Revelation remains relevant today. We must be vigilant not to be swayed by value systems that prioritize wealth, power, and worldly influences. The example of the woman clothed in purple and scarlet serves as a warning against compromising our faith in exchange for fleeting gains.

On the other hand, we are called to be inspired by the bride clothed in white, symbolizing purity and total dedication to God’s plan. May we aspire to be part of this faithful church, committed to living the values of God’s Kingdom in a world full of distractions and compromises.
