CHARONTE, THE WATERMAN
When a glimpse and search the apparent cognition of
the thinking of the “Z” generation, it is clear that the emphasis is on
polarization. If, on the one hand, there is a charm to changing the world, on
the other, pessimism and disappointment abound.
The pathbreaking of the world, empowered by information technology with all its innovation tools, triggered a spate of “plugged generation” a species of virtual religion in this generation. Where there is no space and time imposing limits. Everyone seeks the truth for each other, they run together, but interests are diffuse, they produce a kind of liquid, deformed reality, in the words of the sociologist, Zygmunt Bauman, in his book “Liquid Modernity”.
Roughly speaking, we cite as an example wall street executives, tycoons of large transnational corporations, digital new rich, we do not intend to reason here whether they are wolves or lambs. The fact is that they dedicate themselves body and soul to work and make a fortune. Later, in retirement, they go into philanthropy or politics. It is not uncommon to also find prominent executives of the financial system, cooperating with the economic team of governments, in a cognitive process coming from large financial conglomerates, such as JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and other big players.
If we compare Aristotle's teachings, we have this; individuals were educated in the best ethical and moral principles, in addition to scientific knowledge, to be good and qualified citizens, capable of performing beautiful deeds. These actions, over time, would benefit the community. Therefore, the more individuals that stood out, the more the community participated in such resulting activities.
In summary, will the pragmatism of this generation, and devoted think tank based on a new economic and social order, sponsored by the UN, WEF, and great world leaders, in order to create a disruption in some principles already conquered and ingrained in society over time, which certainly need an “upgrade”, it is true, but which should not be greedily supplanted. In doing so, wouldn't we be facing a kind of virtual nihilism, denying what has already been settled out? Is this the right way to build a new fair world?
In this way, let us strive to make everything work out, as it is an unusual journey towards a new and unknown world. In Greek mythology, the person responsible for carrying out this meta-crossing was Charonte (the waterman)* who charged a coin for this service. In this new post-modern era, who will be responsible for this crossing, and have you already reserved your coin for this unwonted ride??
*In Greek mythology, Charon (Greek:
Χάρων, transl.: Chárōn) is the ferryman of Hades, who carries the souls of the
newly dead over the waters of the River Styx and Acheron, which divided the
world of the living from the world of the dead. A coin, was the price to pay
you for the ride

MARITIME CASE NOTES | SHIPPING AND TRANSPORT
For all friends, practitioners, maritime law students, and enthusiasts. Take a look at an interesting maritime case, regarding dispute resolution decision by the English commercial court.
The High Court, in finding for Owners, held that there was no implied term in the charterparty or bills of lading in this case restricting the right of Owners to direct that freight payable under Owners’ bills of lading should be paid directly to Owners, subject to the obligation on Owners to account for any surplus to Charterers.
Case note contributed by Jim Leighton, LLM (Maritime Law), LLB (Hons), BSc (Hons), Solicitor of England & Wales, LMAA Supporting Member and International Contributor to DMC’s Case Notes... read more at
